Emily took swimming classes.
One of the characters turned into a mermaid but, you will have to read this book to see who did.

This book was recommended by my daughter's classmate -- 4th graders. They both LOVED it.
This is a charming mermaid story sure to delight girls who have grown up with Disney's Ariel. Emily, although she lives on a boat, has never learned to swim. The author includes wonderful details about mermaids' daily lives, including their school, that middle schoolers will find fun. When, in junior high school, she is forced to go in the pool, she discovers, to her shock, that her legs turn into a mermaid tail. After she comes to terms with the astounding discovery that she is half-mermaid, she makes a mermaid friend, discovers the secret of her father's disappearance when she was a baby, and solves the mystery of why her mother can't seem to remember anything about her father or her background. Several sequels have been published as well.
My 4 and 6 year old daughters and I listened to the audio CD in the car, and we all were riveted to the story. It is told from Emily's point of view, and describes her response to finding out she's like a fish when in the water. It's a positive story for any kid who feels out of place and lonely amongst their peers, and explores the excitement of finding your own talents. Some suspense, but not too much for my preschooler.
